Opening of post-doc positions in numerical MHD

Date posted: 1/12/2004

Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Physics Department at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris. These positions have been made available by a Chaire d'Excellence award to Prof. Steven Balbus, for the purpose of establishing a center for high-performance multi-processor computation dedicated to numerical research in MHD problems in astrophysics and closely related areas (e.g. dynamo theory).

We seek applicants with a background in either numerical or theoretical MHD processes who will be able to use the Center's resources productively. Funding will initially be for a period of one year, with the expectation of renewal for a second year based on satisfactory performance. The positions will be hosted by the Laboratoire de Radioastronomie at the ENS, whose permanent members include S. Balbus, E. Dormy, E. Falgarone, M. Gerin, P. Hennebelle, and M. Pérault. The group enjoys strong ties with the ENS physics department, in particular with the laboratory of S. Fauve, where MHD fluid experiments are actively pursued. There are also ongoing interactions with members of the Institut d'Astrophysique and the Observatoire de Paris, a 15 minute walk from the ENS.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a statement of research interests and experience, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to the address below. Complete applications should be received before FEBRUARY 1, 2005 for full consideration. Later applications will also be accepted as new positions are made available. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
