Matlab 7.2

Installation

The 32 bits version of the software is installed on px06 to px12, the 64 bits version on px14 to px16, and the Solaris version should soon be on workstations solara and solarb.

The bought package contains :

  • Matlab 7.2 (5 tokens, so 5 possible users at the same time).

  • Matlab Signal Processing Toolbox (1 token)

Considering the small number of tokens, users are encouraged not to forget unused open Matlab sessions.

Configuration

Nothing special to do, the user environment is setup at login time.

Check by typing :

which matlab

Documentation

The software comes with an integrated online help, and also a complete paper documentation (yes, paper still exists !), six manuals which are in the lab library.

Problems

Matlab is a heavy application, graphics resources consuming. It doesn't start, or crash, when run on a loaded machine. Should this happen, the workaround is to close your tens of unused windows then restart.

In fact the problems come from the «trendy» graphic environment that wraps the Matlab commands processor, user interface in Java, heavy, slow, etc.

It's still possible to use Matlab as in the good old days, without Java, decorations, startup splash screen, etc.

matlab -nodesktop -nojvm -nosplash

the responsivity rises by a factor of 4.

Mathematica 5.2

Installation

The software is installed on all the Linux desktop PC of the lab. Architecture detection, 32/64 bits, is performed at startup time.

Bought package (ENS site license) :

  • Mathematica 5.2 (at the moment, 12 tokens from the ENS tokens spool. Seems reasonable for us).

Configuration

The user environment is setup upon session login.

Check :

which mathematica

Concerning the runtime licenses, configuration is to be done on a per user basis, when running the software for the first time. A dialog box will appear :

  • Select option Network license

  • In the field Enter the name of a server..., type in : !sd07

(Don't forget the leading exclamation mark.)

Documentation

The software provides an online help and a small tutorial. No paper documentation.
